Stop Researching and Start Executing!

For so many of us we realize that we no longer want to stay in our current career and know we want to change careers. However, fast forward 6 to 12 months later and we’re still researching on how to change our careers by reading articles, books and listening to friends about what we should do with our career.

Let me be the first to admit I’ve done the same thing, but let me also be the first to tell you…stop it!


There comes a time where you have to stop researching and planning and instead you have to start executing your plan to change careers!

‘But Charles, I do not know where to start. I haven’t updated my resume in years! I do not know anyone who can help me! I’m not qualified to do anything else!’  

I hear you and understand where you’re coming from, I really do!

However, there is no reason/excuse that you cannot overcome with the amount of resources at our finger tips.

So if you don’t know where to start let me help you.

If you haven’t updated your resume in years don’t worry I’ll help you with that too.

You don’t know anyone that can help you…nonsense you just need the right approach to get people to help.

Maybe you’re not qualified today for something today, but with free courses online why can’t you level-up to be qualified for something in the very short-term.

Instead of coming up with reasons you cannot make a change figure out how to overcome any/all obstacles!

Just Do It!

If you say ‘I do not know where to start!’ then I will tell you to just start! If you just start you’ll be much further along by just starting than those who never start.  

Those who never start have paralysis by analysis. These people constantly think, research, think, research and then…do nothing!

Instead, why don’t you start by sitting down and thinking about what you want your career to look like. 

  • Are you loking for ‘work/life’ balance?
  • Are you looking for an increase in compensation?
  • Perhaps you’re looking to work at a company you’ve always admired. 

Point is that you have to get started! 

And if you need help with where to start I would say figure out what you want professionally for yourself in the next 1-2 years. Why 1-2 years? Because the days of working somewhere in one industry for 50 years is over!

Heck, in the next 5 years your interests may change and you may decide to start your own business. 

So for now just focus on your goals for the next 1-2 years and start working to achieving those goals.

Your Career Change Strategy

You have figured out what you want to do for the next 1-2 years right, but now you’re thinking, ‘Where the hell do I start?’ 

Do not worry as you and we will get started on this together:

  • Determine what you want your next career to be​.
    • Again, do not dream about the next 5 years. Instead just think what will you be doing for the next 1-2 years that will help you level-up your career trajectory, make you some nice money and be happy.
  • Research the companies you are most interested in working for.
    • Don’t go crazy here and make a list of 100 companies and at the same time don’t be stubborn to say you only want to work for 1 company. A good number to start with would be somewhere between 15-25 companies (This number could vary based on willingness to relocate).
    •  Also, create a basic excel document to track these companies, who you’re networking with at these companies and what jobs you’ve applied to. The list will help you stay focused and steer you towards how to approach your daily career search. Without a list you’ll just be stabbing in the dark and all over the board. 
  • Pull out your most recent copy of your resume and revamp it to fit the new career you’re going after.
    • Do not go for perfection here as perfection will always keep you from moving forward.
    •  Focus on your resume having valuable content the reader can’t ignore, having your resume tell a story and finally please use spell-check!
  • Update your LinkedIn profile. Don’t have one? Create one now!
    • You should mirror your LinkedIn profile to what you have documented on your resume.
    • Also, use a professional looking picture and by professional I mean you’re wearing a nice collared shirt at minimum and NOT holding an alcoholic beverage. You may disagree but appearances matter.
  • Start mining LinkedIn to find people to network with that can help you get in front of hiring managers/decision makers.
    • If you’re spending 80% of your time applying to jobs online and hoping you’ll get an interview then your strategy, or lack thereof, is wrong!
    • Also, if you’re messaging people with generic messages like ‘Can you help me find a job?’ you have no chance of these people helping you.
  • Find a friend or co-worker to mock-interview with.
    • Do not wait until the night before to start thinking about the interview and how you’re going to answer questions. 
  • Create your ‘decision criteria’ for what you want in a career so when you receive an offer you’re 100% clear about if the offer is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ based on your decision criteria.
    • Items that could be in your decision criteria:
      • A minimum amount in salary you will not go below.
      • Particular benefits like paid time off, 4 weeks versus only 2 weeks.
      • 401k matching
      • The experience you’ll gain from this position for future opportunities.
