Focus on Positioning, not Perfection
So you’ve figured out your next career, but can’t quite seem to be able to write your new resume.
You haven’t written your resume in years…where do you start???
Do you write only 1 page or is it 2 pages maximum these days? Do you put your education near the top or bottom of the resume?
How do you handle explaining gaps in employment? What font/formatting are you suppose to use?
These are all valid questions, but I would not get caught up in any of this yet as your main focus should be ‘What content should I be putting on this resume that is relevant to the career I’m applying to?’
So many people get caught up in the unnecessary items before even being able to clearly articulate how they are qualified for the career they are applying to.
Before you know it you get frustrated trying to write your resume and just give up and stick with the job you hate!
Secure an Interview
The goal of your resume is to for you to secure an interview.
So how do you secure an interview? By convincing both the applicant tracking system and human being reading your resume that you’re worth talking to.
Think of your resume as a marketing tool that positions you as a solution to an employer’s problem.
The employer has a problem and is looking for a solution to their problem(s)...
You want to be that solution!
Speak to The Problems
So with that in mind you want to write your resume in a way that directly speaks to the employer’s problem(s) and convinces them you are worth brining in for an interview to discuss how you can solve their problem(s).
